Meeting with Ed Freeman


I sat in on a roundtable discussion with Ed Freeman and a large amount of students. He invited all of us to ask questions of him. One question that I asked was “what do you view as an acceptable alternative to the separation thesis?”. He opened up immediatley to describe the ways in which a company’s employees (including managers) could effectively input values that are core to the company’s mission and vision. He stated (and I paraphrase) that a moral obligation to operate responsibly and morally could (and should) be indoctrinated throughout the company’s employees as well as shareholders. By doing this, a company can become much more valuable to society and thereby increase its overall longevity and success.
