My white paper discusses the issue of childhood obesity in the United States and my recommendations are for the Federal Government. The report explains the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. Childhood obesity has become an issue all over the globe, but especially in the United States. In the past 30 years the percentage of obese children has increased rapidly. This obesity follows children into adulthood and puts them at risk of developing major physical and mental illnesses. The government has the power and the means to stop the spread of obesity and give these children a chance for healthier lives. The federal government has made efforts to stop the spread of childhood obesity, but so far they have not been able to resolve this issue. They have implemented various initiatives, but the results of these initiatives are hard to measure and the issue is far from disappearing. I believe that it is the government’s responsibility to make changes to legislation immediately. Children are the future of this country and if they are not healthy we will all suffer. In my report I make several recommendations about what the government can do to cure this epidemic. I recommend that the government should impose advertising regulations for the fast food industry, create a tax on unhealthy food, and create regulations for schools. Schools, parents, and communities can all contribute to fighting the problem, but the only way to successfully overcome childhood obesity is for the government to take action.
