Approximately 30% of all municipal solid waste in the United States consists of packaging and containers, and one of the major contributors of this waste is the fast food industry. Despite all of this packaging waste being generated from food business’ activities, there is no legal responsibility for these companies towards their waste and the responsibility of handling it is placed upon the public (who do not always do a great job).
Fast food restaurants should take responsibility for their role in creating packaging and container waste, and through principals such as product stewardship they can make changes and implement policies that will benefit themselves, their customers, and the environment as a whole. This is how.
